Bounds, open questions, and retired claims
One source for the limits. The chain explains encoding, memory and behaviour — not subjective experience. Only one link is causal (capacity = theta over gamma, by tACS); the rest is model or direction. Consciousness is deferred to Mind. What is falsified and retired is the earlier physics by regime — the vortex field, the radiative EM far-field carrier, TIR optical-fibre conduction, energy = information, and DNA phase memory; EM as such is NOT retired — an electrical signal is electromagnetic, and its near-field (ephaptic) form is affirmed (§18–§19), with only its functional role open.

What is causal is one link (capacity = θ/γ, by tACS); the rest is model or direction; most absolute and causal quantification is open, and the decisive real-data validation — a behaviour-labelled memory task with artefact control — is still open. Consciousness, both the access question and the hard problem, is open and is deferred to the companion paper, Mind. The earlier physics is falsified and retired by regime — the vortex field, the radiative EM far-field carrier, TIR optical-fibre conduction, energy = information, and DNA phase memory. EM as such is NOT retired: an electrical signal is electromagnetic, and its near-field (ephaptic) form is affirmed (§18–§19) and load-bearing; only the far-field radiative carrier is retired, by measurement (radiated fraction ~10⁻¹⁵; conduction 0.5–120 m/s vs light ~2×10⁸ m/s). The single forbidden named entity is the “consciousness vortex field”.

Failure log (consolidated)
- Model ≠ proof: sufficiency in code is not truth in the brain; only the θ/γ capacity link reaches causal evidence (tACS).
- Energy ≠ information: energy is the price of switching (§2); equating the two is a category error (retired below).
- Binding is a conjunction, not a sum: synchrony makes a pointer, not an energy total or a carrier wave (§6).
- Real-data PAC is method-check, not task: the scalp PAC demonstration is a methods check on resting data, not a behaviour-labelled memory task.
- Direction ≠ magnitude: disease and motor reads match in sign; absolute Hz, gains, and latencies are not asserted.

Retired register (irreversible)
The following were physically falsified and are retired; they must not revive as evidence anywhere, under any name. The axon as an optical fibre / TIR waveguide — neural conduction is 0.5–120 m/s versus light at ~2×10⁸ m/s, a 10⁶–10⁸× mismatch, and the refractive-index arrangement is reversed. The EEG as an electromagnetic carrier's beat — tissue coherence length falls short by ~10⁹×; the real signal is synchronised synaptic current. Low-frequency sums producing high energy producing information — a linear sum stays low-frequency, and energy is not information (category error). A phase memory written in DNA — the real substrate is synaptic plasticity (§5). Forbidden renamings — the same entity under a new label — include the "vortex" as a field and any "consciousness vortex field". The re-grounded, functional parallel-eddy reading of thought belongs to Mind, where it is explicitly distinguished from this retired field.
Amendment — conduction-EM vs radiative-EM: what is retired, precisely
The retirement above must be read by regime, because an electrical signal is itself electromagnetic: the chemistry chapter unifies conduction (χ→0, longitudinal, a near-field) and radiation (χ→90°, transverse, a far-field) as one phenomenon. What is falsified and stays retired is the radiative, light-speed reading — the axon as a light-speed optical fibre (conduction is 0.5–120 m/s, confirmed), and the EEG as a coherent radiative carrier (the coherence shortfall). Three measurements forbid the far-field carrier: it does not radiate (the brain is sub-wavelength, radiated fraction ~10⁻¹⁵, §18), tissue is transparent to it at these wavelengths (head/skin-depth ~10⁻³, so it would pass through rather than reflect), and the 0.5–120 m/s conduction is ~10⁶× too slow for waveguided light. What is not retired, and is affirmed, is the near-field / conduction electric form of communication, which biology demonstrably uses: weakly-electric fish drive electric-organ discharges at distinct frequencies, read them with electroreceptors, and run a jamming-avoidance response that keeps the frequencies apart — frequency-division electrocommunication (verified in repro/neuro/_inherited/vp_electrocommunication.py: the field propagates to a receiver, channels multiplex with ~10⁻¹⁴ cross-talk, and the frequency gap is opened). The earlier blanket phrasing over-reached in lumping all of EM with the radiative carrier. For the human brain specifically there is no dedicated electric organ; and "weak" is true only of the scalp EEG (µV, volume-conducted), not of the local near-field, which §19 measures at the ephaptic threshold — derived ΔVm ≈ 0.27 mV (measured field 2.29 mV/mm × measured sensitivity 0.12) contained in the independently measured < 0.5 mV bound, a field-to-threshold ratio of order one, not ≪1. So the near-field is affirmed and non-negligible; what stays open — not asserted, not retired — is whether cognition functionally uses it, decided by a behaviour-labelled intracranial field cancel-vs-augment test carried to Mind. The single named entity that remains forbidden is the specific “consciousness vortex field”; the general field/ephaptic question is affirmed as real (near-field, §18–§19), with only its functional role open.

This paper deliberately stops at the computation. The access question (why some processing is reportable) and the hard problem (why any of it is felt) are not solved here; the one empirical attempt at an access marker did not robustly reproduce. Both are carried, openly, to the companion paper, Mind — which builds its functional account on this verified chain and keeps the retired field retired.
