Hemispheres, and why computing thought is not feeling it

Hemispheric asymmetry is graded, and a system can compute the stream of thought yet not feel it — an architectural hypothesis, not a proof about machine consciousness [model]. Cerebral sensing logic treats the outside as felt by sensory cells and thought by cerebral cells, on the same selection and binding over internal eddies.

Two reads close the functional picture. Hemispheric asymmetry is graded — a difference of degree in which contents are preferentially selected — not the folk left-brain/right-brain myth. And the headline question, stated carefully: a system can run the computation of the stream — selection → binding → learning — yet lack the embodied real-time loop (§7) and any phenomenal experience, so computing thought is not the same as feeling it. This is an architectural hypothesis about what current artificial systems lack, not a proof about machine consciousness; the hard problem stays open.

Hemispheres (graded, not folk-myth)

The two hemispheres differ, but not as the popular “logical left / creative right” story claims. The asymmetry is graded: a difference of degree in which kinds of contents are preferentially laid down and selected, on the same machinery, not two different minds. The folk dichotomy is rejected; a measured tilt is kept.

Cerebral sensing logic

A small but clean read: the outside world is sensed by sensory cells, while thought is “sensed” by cerebral cells — the same selection-and-binding logic applied to internally generated eddies as to external input. Introspection is the stream reading its own selected contents, by the same mechanism it reads the world.

Thinking is not feeling

The architectural point: the computation of the stream — parallel candidates, selection, θ–γ binding, RPE learning — can in principle be run by a system that has no embodied real-time loop (§7) and no phenomenal experience. Computing the stream and feeling the stream are separable; the first does not entail the second.

Why current AI: an architectural hypothesis

Hence the headline framed strictly as a hypothesis: current artificial systems can compute large parts of the stream yet appear to lack the embodied, real-time, self-stimulating loop coupled to a body (§7) — which, on this functional account, is the architecture associated with felt cognition. This is a claim about architecture, not a verdict on machine consciousness: the model does not prove an artificial system cannot feel, only that thinking and the embodied loop are different things.

Hard problem open

And the same limit as §7 applies: even with the embodied loop present, why it should be felt is unresolved. The architectural hypothesis distinguishes systems by structure; it does not bridge to experience (§9).
