The open problem of experience, and the retired register
The open problem of experience is held open, not solved: the model specifies function — the stream of thought — but not its subjective character, the quale. The consciousness access marker (perturbational complexity, PCI) is an honest negative; it did not robustly reproduce. No link in the paper is claimed to be causal.
One source for what is unresolved. The access marker tested for consciousness — a perturbational-complexity read mixing high-frequency (γ) and low-frequency activity — was an honest negative: it did not robustly reproduce. The access question (what makes some processing reportable) is open; the hard problem (why any of it is felt) is open; the felt quale is open. The functional model specifies the stream and the loop; it does not decide experience. The earlier electromagnetic field stays retired as a quantum carrier, but whether the classical field is a binding medium is reopened by §4 — open, to be decided by field strength.
What this paper does and does not claim
| the paper does | the paper does not do |
|---|---|
| specify the stream of thought as a functional process (model) | solve the hard problem, or decide whether the loop is felt |
| name a physical mediator for every eddy/field (ions, band-phase) | posit any propagating field or medium of thought |
| build entirely on, and cite, the verified neuro chain | let neuro depend on it (the dependency is one-way) |
| state the AI difference as an architectural hypothesis | prove an artificial system cannot have experience |
The honest negative
The one empirical attempt at an access marker — a perturbational-complexity read combining high-frequency (γ) and low-frequency activity to index consciousness — did not robustly reproduce. It is reported as a negative, not buried: the paper has no validated marker of consciousness, and says so.
Open register
- the access question: what makes some processing reportable rather than silent — unresolved.
- the hard problem: why any of the function is accompanied by experience — unresolved; the model specifies function only (§7, §8).
- the felt quale: the subjective character of a thought or feeling — open.
- the absolutes across the chain: selection time, eddy size, items per θ frame, learning rate, dopamine concentration.
- the causal status of binding-by-synchrony itself: whether γ-coherence is causal to binding or a correlate is debated in neuroscience and is not settled here.
Retired register (irreversible)
The following stay retired, under any name. The electromagnetic “vortex field” as a quantum carrier of binding — the coherence-length argument that rejected it (short by ~10⁹×) is the quantum decoherence length, and validly refutes quantum theories of mind. Scope correction: that argument does not close the classical field, which §4 emerges to be coherent across the brain; so the classical-field-as-medium question was wrongly placed here and is reopened as open, to be decided by field strength (§2, §4) — what stays retired is the quantum carrier, not the classical-field question. The axon as an optical fibre / TIR waveguide, and the EEG as an electromagnetic carrier’s beat — both physically false (see the neuro paper, §9). Energy equated with information; a phase memory written in DNA. The functional parallel-eddy reading of this paper is a structure on the ionic substrate (§2).
What would move each claim
Honestly stated, the upgrades: a claim moves from model to direction when a wired mechanism’s direction is matched in real data (several already are, inherited from neuro); from direction to causal when a manipulation changes the outcome as predicted — for the stream, a phase-targeted intervention that changes selection or binding in a behaviour-labelled, artefact-controlled task. For consciousness specifically, an upgrade needs a robust, reproducible access marker plus report-labelled data — which does not yet exist. Until then, this remains a frontier paper.
