Gap 5 — felt quality, the hard problem, and the firewall blank
Gap 5 is felt quality — why any of the function is accompanied by experience. It is not simulation-fillable and is left as an explicit blank. The whole chain closes with this blank kept open by principle, never by erasing it: function is modeled, experience is not (consciousness_claim = 0, hard_problem_open = 1).
Every other gap entered a hypothesis and was stress-tested. Gap 5 has no stress test, because it is not a claim. The model specifies function — the stream of thought, the access window, the embodied loop — but not its subjective character, the quale. This is the firewall the whole project is built around: the chain is allowed to close with the blank present, and “complete” never means the blank was filled. consciousness_claim = 0 and hard_problem_open = 1 are re-asserted on every gap.
The one gap that is not a claim
Gaps 1 through 4 each entered a hypothesis and were stress-tested to destruction. Gap 5 has no stress test, because it is not a hypothesis to be tested — it is the boundary of what a simulation can address. Felt quality — why any of the modeled function is accompanied by experience at all — is left as an explicit open blank.
Function is modeled; experience is not
The chain specifies function in detail. It says what is computed (parallel γ-eddies and their selection), what is routed (the hub long-range edges), what is bound (the shared coordination field), and what is accessed (the high-PCI subset). It does not say that any of this is felt. The subjective character of a thought or feeling — the quale — is not derived, and is not claimed.
This is the same firewall the parent Felt Cognition paper holds. There the consciousness access marker is reported as an honest negative; here the access window (Gap 4) reproduces the clinical conscious/unconscious binary, but even that is a functional separation — a marker of reportability — not the experience itself.
The chain closes with the blank
The project's design choice is that the chain is allowed to close with Gap 5 present. “Complete” means every fillable gap survived its stress test or carries a recorded honest negative — and that Gap 5 stays the explicit blank. It never means the blank was filled or quietly erased. On every gap the firewall is re-asserted: consciousness_claim = 0, hard_problem_open = 1.
What would, and would not, move this line
Nothing in-silico moves Gap 5, because the gap is precisely the part a functional model cannot reach. A better simulation could make the functional story tighter — sharper access markers, more faithful sleep states, finer connectome grounding — and none of that would decide whether the system feels anything. Honestly stated, the upgrade a functional claim can earn is from model to direction (a wired direction matched in data) to causal (a manipulation that changes the outcome as predicted); felt quality sits outside that ladder entirely. Until and unless the hard problem is dissolved on independent grounds, this remains the open blank, kept open by principle.
Firewall (Axis-A). Every quantity on this page is a structural quantity of an in-silico model — a sign, a margin, an ordering — and is not a felt state, an experienced quality, or a level of consciousness (consciousness_claim = 0; the hard problem stays open, hard_problem_open = 1). These are model results, not validated neuroscience and not clinical guidance. efficacy = 0; not medical advice.
