What a thought is — a mechanistic definition that closes the paper
A thought is defined as a union of faculties, not an abstract umbrella. It is serial selection among parallel ionic gamma-eddies, bound within a theta frame, running on a substrate emerged from 4D-DNA: organs, brainwave and memory generated, not assumed. The definition is closed on the mechanism axis; whether any of it is felt stays open.
This chapter closes the paper by defining its central word. A thought is the union of fourteen mental faculties — its ten core faculties built, frozen and bit-reproducible on a substrate emerged from 4D-DNA, its four higher faculties honestly owed — and the everyday sense of an indivisible “stream” is recovered as serial selection among parallel ionic eddies bound within a θ frame. The definition is closed on the mechanism axis; whether any of it is felt is a separate, orthogonal question left open.
Thought is a defined term now, not an abstract umbrella
The word “thought” was never hard to close because the work was unfinished; it was hard because one loose word silently pointed at many different built mechanisms. Used in its widest, undefined sense it folds the felt question — is any of this experienced? — into the same breath as the mechanical one, and no mechanism can ever close that conflation. Define the word as a decomposition and the slipperiness resolves into a naming problem, not a coverage gap.
So this paper closes the way a definition closes: it fixes what “thought” refers to. The referent is the faculty union set out in the next chapter (§17), where each faculty either carries a built mechanism or is named as owed. Nothing is hand-waved into the umbrella and nothing is quietly dropped out of it.
The sleeper test: cognition is one room, thought is the house
A sleeping person is doing no cognition — no awake, goal-directed processing — yet mental activity continues as dreams and overnight memory consolidation. So cognition cannot be the umbrella term; it is one faculty under a larger one. The everyday word that names the whole house is “thought,” or “mental process.”
This is why the paper refuses two easy moves. It does not collapse everything to “cognition,” which would lose sleep and dreaming; and it does not leave “thought” undefined, which is what made it feel un-closeable. It names every room and closes the house room by room, with “cognition” sitting inside as the awake-processing room — no more, no less.
The definition
A thought, mechanically, is serial selection among parallel ionic eddies, bound within a θ frame. Many local ionic assemblies ignite in parallel in the γ band, winner-take-most (§6); the basal-ganglia action-selection loop of the neuro chain selects one (§7); a dopamine reward-prediction error shapes which assemblies are laid down next (§8); and one-after-another selection, bound by global γ synchrony within a θ frame, is the stream (§9).
Every term in that sentence names a physical carrier — an ion spike and a synaptic current, gated by the phase of classified low-frequency oscillations — never an unnamed field. The felt continuity of a single “train of thought” is recovered as a fast chain of discrete selections, and the felt “wholeness” of a moment as θ–γ phase-coherence (communication-through-coherence), not a medium. The full faculty decomposition behind this one-line definition is §17.
This is an emerged substrate, not a toy simulation
The numbers above are not stipulated on an assumed brain; the brain itself is emerged first, from DNA. Each organ is anchored to a measured master regulatory gene whose sequence fixes a single bistable parameter γ through the same nearest-neighbour metric the DNA and neuro papers use — FOXG1 for the cerebrum, EN1 for the cerebellum, SIM1 for the hypothalamus, LHX2 for the hippocampus — and from those four measured numbers an ascending fold-threshold predicts the developmental commit order with no free parameter (§3).
On that emerged tissue the excitatory and inhibitory populations make a θ–γ local field that is radiated through the wave equation, and the emitted front travels at the wave speed c — a genuine electromagnetic emission, the signal an EEG or MEG records (§4). Memory is then a physical attractor: a Hebbian write deepens an engram cell’s well until it completes the full stored pattern from a tenth of a cue, clocked by that same emerged θ rhythm (§5).
Every one of these numbers is produced by shipped, deterministic code — single-threaded, seeded, bit-for-bit reproducible (seed = 19) — not by a sketch tuned to look right. The stream of thought runs on top of a substrate that was generated, organ by organ and rhythm by rhythm, not assumed into place. That is the difference between this and a toy simulation: the floor under the model is itself derived and reproducible.
What “closed” means here — and what it does not
The closure is on the mechanism axis only: the listed faculties are mechanistically built, frozen and reproducible, and the word “thought” now has a definite referent. It is not a claim that experience has been explained.
The felt axis — whether there is something it is like to be any of this — is a different axis the decomposition does not lie on, and the closure makes no claim on it. The mandated firewall sentence stands wherever closure is asserted: thought, defined as the §17 decomposition, is closed on the mechanism axis; whether any of it is felt is a separate, orthogonal question on which this closure asserts nothing. The internal flags hold: consciousness_claim = 0, hard_problem_open = 1.
The closing declaration
Stated plainly: thought, defined as the faculty decomposition of §17, is closed on the mechanism axis. Its ten core faculties are built, frozen and bit-reproducible on the emerged substrate; its four higher faculties — language, volition, social cognition, metacognition — are honestly owed, each with the external input it needs named rather than hidden.
This is a large result, and it should not be mistaken for a small one. A multi-chapter substrate was emerged from DNA, made to radiate a real brainwave and to store memory as a physical attractor, and on top of it the everyday word “thought” was resolved into a precise, census-checked set of mechanisms. The four owed faculties are not a failure to conceal; under the no-tuning discipline, naming what is owed is the same act that makes the closed parts trustworthy.
What stays genuinely open
Two things remain open, and neither is a piece of thought left undone. The felt, phenomenal axis — the hard problem — is out of scope by axis, not by omission, and is handed to the reader in §12. The empirical efficacy of the brain’s ephaptic field — whether cognition biologically uses the coordination the field can provide — is an honest debt, closeable only by the cited in-vivo field-cancel-versus-augment recording, not by any amount of in-package mechanism.
The decomposition that grounds this closure, faculty by faculty and with its external-taxonomy census, is §17. The standing open register is §12.
